Project:  Zero Waste Europe Country:  Belgium City:  Brussels

Zero Waste Europe is a European network promoting a smarter approach to resources and waste: less disposables, more reuse, repair, separate collection, and local solutions. The organization unites dozens of environmental groups across Europe and helps translate the idea of zero waste into real change, from city programs to pan-European policies. Currently, the Zero Waste Europe network comprises 39 local and national NGOs from across Europe. Their focus is not simply on addressing the waste problem but on changing the entire system. Zero Waste Europe works with cities, communities, businesses, and partners to reduce waste at source, develop reuse models, improve material collection and recycling, and make local economies more sustainable. A separate focus is supporting municipalities and local initiatives through programs like Zero Waste Cities, as well as training and practical tools for implementing zero waste approaches locally. Another important part of their work is working at the EU level. Zero Waste Europe promotes stronger regulations on packaging, recycling, textiles, food waste, chemical safety, and the reduction of waste incineration. The organization seeks to connect what's already working in cities and communities with European laws, ensuring that sustainable solutions become the norm rather than the exception. Its website highlights current campaigns such as food waste, eliminating waste incineration, and better biowaste management, and recent results include influencing discussions on packaging regulations and the EU Waste Framework Directive.
