The Dolphin Research Institute is an Australian organization that studies dolphins, whales, and the marine environment of Victoria while engaging local communities. Their work goes beyond observing marine animals: they collect data for conservation, monitor the health of the coastal environment, and help better understand how human activity impacts marine life. Much of their work involves long-term dolphin and whale projects. They have separate projects focusing on common dolphins in Port Phillip, whales in the Two Bays Whale Project, and killer whales in the Killer Whales Australia project. They also collect sighting reports and develop citizen science to enable research to be conducted not only by scientists but also by residents, volunteers, and nature lovers. Another important focus is environmental education. The Institute conducts educational programs, develops initiatives for schoolchildren and young people, supports volunteers and interns, and promotes more respectful behavior around marine animals through campaigns like Commit to Dolphin Distancing and Commit to Whale Distancing. They don't just educate about marine life; they strive to change people's daily habits so that dolphins and whales feel safer.
